How to Make Matcha Green Tea

June 09, 2015

You may have heard of the many health benefits of Matcha green tea and you may be interested in giving it a go!

Matcha may seem slightly confusing to make at first, as it’s a different type of tea preparation, however it’s really simple once you have the right tools. Matcha comes in powder form; it is made from finely ground green tea leaves and so when drinking Matcha, you consume the whole green tea leaf. This is why it has a higher caffeine content and more antioxidants than regular green tea.

There is plenty you can do with Matcha, you can drink it in its classic form as a hot tea, or beginners may prefer Matcha tea lattes which are sweeter, you can also use Matcha to make iced tea, or use the powder in cooking, for example to make Matcha cupcakes – yum!

How to make Matcha tea:

  1. Put half a teaspoon of Matcha powder into your cup or Matcha bowl
  2. Pour over 80 °C water to fill 1/4 of the cup (if you don’t have a temperature gage on your kettle just boil and leave to cool down for around 4 mins)
  3. Whisk the tea in an ‘M’ shape for approx. 30 seconds – it should form a paste
  4. Pour over more 80 °C water to fill the cup as much as you would like and whisk again in an 'M' shape - it should start to froth on top
  5. Drink up and enjoy!

How to make a Matcha tea latte:
